Pakistan has been an importer and exporter of wheat but at present appears to be able to just cater for domestic demand. While Argentina is not one of the wheat giants of the world, its exports fell significantly in 2008/09 and 2009/10 and have recovered in 2010/11 and 2011/12. Kazakhstan is an emerging exporter of wheat although exports tend to vary with production which is variable as most wheat is grown dry-land. It will be the world's 6th largest exporter in 2012/13.

Kazakhstan became independent in 1988 and initially suffered a downturn in wheat production but this has reversed since 2000 and continues to grow.
